If you want a beach right on the doorstep, this hotel, positioned on the small seafront promenade in the village of Tamariu, is ideal. There are scenic walks along the coastal path, and the larger, sandier beaches of Calella de Palafrugell or Llafranc are a short drive away. The smart hotel restaurant looks directly out onto Tamariu’s seafront promenade so you can tuck into the buffet breakfast whilst enjoying the sea views. At lunch and dinner, there's a good choice of super-fresh, just-off-the-line fish, plus Catalan specialities and international options. Read expert review From £ 103

The best hotels in Spain

Built into a steep hillside between Marbella Old Town and neighbouring Ojén, the luxurious Urban Villa can take a bit of finding, but it’s worth it when you do. With spectacular views down to the coast and across to Gibraltar and Morocco, this is less of an urban retreat and more of a stylish, hillside hideaway with Marbella’s silky sands just 10 minutes away. Originally converted from two farmhouses, the décor has a smart, chilled-out Mediterranean feel with comfy white sofas, traditional white cotton embroidered bedspreads, Moroccan and Asian carved wood furniture and period fireplaces. The best beach hotels in the Mediterranean

You'll need a streak of fabulousness to feel really at home in the W – its bars and restaurants are peopled with model types, and its poolside areas can look like catalogue photo shoots on a busy afternoon. In contrast to this, and the dazzling lobby, the rooms themselves are a little subdued, but their all-glass fronts do afford spectacular views of the sea, the city or – if you're lucky, or pay a little more – both. The W’s location on the water’s edge, the sea lapping at its feet, means that beach-goers and sea-gazers will love it. Read expert review From £ 227

The best Barcelona hotels near the beach

This is one of the smartest hotels in Spain but it is not remotely flashy. You walk into an atmosphere of soothing luxury with none of the hushed pomposity often prevalent in high end hotels. With lots of space both inside and out, huge pools, great restaurants, a superb spa and a top-level golf course, you can happily just check in and switch off for the duration. In the hills just off the coast between Estepona and Sotogrande, just below the pretty village of Casares, the hotel has sweeping views down to the Mediterranean and across the countryside. The hotel’s beach club is five minutes’ away by private shuttle. Read expert review From £ 547

• The best all-inclusive hotels in Spain

The Balandret is a stylish boutique hotel right on the beach in Valencia. You can amble out onto the promenade for a walk or bike ride or just run into the sea. If you can’t be bothered to move, the restaurant terrace is ideal for a cold beer or two or a leisurely paella at lunchtime. The Balandret could be described as Scandi seaside chic – if there is such a thing. Designer Carlos Serra has gone for a cool Mediterranean palate of pale blues, greys and natural tones, using light materials and simple lines. Read expert review From £ 81

The best budget hotels in Barcelona

A vast seaside hotel, with only 143 rooms, the Hotel Ra is all about space and tranquility, with a peerless spa, rooftop pool, private beach area and a number of corners where guests can read a book, sip a café con leche or watch the waves while they eat. Most whims are catered for here, as if the rooftop pool, surrounded by day beds, the large, superbly equipped gym, and private beach club aren’t enough. The spa is exceptional. • The best hotels in the Costa del Sol

The hotel is right by the beach between Marbella and Puerto Banús on Spain’s Costa del Sol, protected by the Sierra Blanca mountains, around 40 minutes’ drive from Malaga airport. It is a very smart address indeed. The low-rise white buildings with blue and white tiles and flowers spilling down the walls make you feel as if you are in a traditional Andalusian village as you stroll along paths flanked by subtropical plants and banana, bamboo and orange trees. A stream runs through the gardens from the mountains behind the hotel down to the sea. There are two light-filled restaurants right by the beach, Sea Grill and Del Mar, as well as a bar on the sand in summer. Read expert review From £ 374

The best family-friendly hotels in Majorca

The hotel overlooks Malvarrosa beach, and is 1.25 miles (2 km) from the City of Arts and Sciences and 3 miles (5 km) from the cathedral. This is obviously a great location in the summer, when you can make good use of the outdoor pool and the gardens, and of course the beach. It might look all modern Las Vegas glitz now, but Las Arenas has history. It opened in 1898 as a grand hotel, frequented by the great and good of the day. Although it has been largely rebuilt, the pool, pavilion and colonnades give you an idea of what it was like back in the distant days of the 20th century. Today, there is a flash new spa with lots of treatments to make you feel like a film star. Read expert review From £ 124
