Here at CelebMix, we love a throwback and this week we are throwing it back to Sophie Ellis-Bextor’s hit single from 2001, ‘Murder On The Dancefloor’.
Who is Sophie Ellis-Bextor?
Sophie Ellis-Bextor is a British singer-songwriter and model, who rose to fame back in the early 2000s with bop after bop singles from her debut album, ‘Read My Lips’. The album was released in August 2001 and has since gone to achieve double platinum status in the UK.
The album features the singles: ‘Take Me Home’, ‘Get Over You’ and ‘Music Gets The Best Of Me’. However, we are going to take a look at her most successful single from that album and probably from her entire career. That single, of course, is the infectious dance-pop hit, ‘Murder On The Dancefloor’.
‘Murder On The Dancefloor’ was a follow-up to Ellis-Bextor’s debut single, ‘Take Me Home’. Both singles peaked at number two in the UK Singles Chart respectively, becoming her most commercially successful singles to date. Although, out of the two singles, it was ‘Murder On The Dancefloor’ which saw Sophie Ellis-Bextor break out as a dance-pop artist even further, expanding to further European countries.
How successful was Sophie Ellis-Bextor’s career after the throwback hit?
The single quickly became a staple for 2000s British pop music, with people praising the single to this day for still sounding so catchy and fresh. There was no doubt that we were all looking at the next biggest British pop star to grace the industry.
The singles which followed from Ellis-Bextor’s debut album run, ‘Get Over You / Move This Mountain’ and ‘Music Gets The Best Of Me’ didn’t perform too bad commercially either, charting at number three and fourteen in the UK Singles Chart respectively.
Throughout the years, Ellix-Bextor has continued to release album after album, resulting in her becoming a critically-acclaimed pop star. Her most recent full-length release is 2016’s Familia, which was released via her own label. Unfortunately, no singles or albums have managed to match the commercial success of Ellis-Bextor’s early days but there is no doubt that the ‘Murder On The Dancefloor’ hitmaker is good at what she does.
Familia featured the singles, ‘Come With Us’, ‘Crystallise’ and ‘Wild Forever’, which all received moderate airplay from BBC Radio 2, as well as receiving generally positive reviews from music critics.
What is the ‘Murder On The Dancefloor’ hitmaker up to now?
As for more recent times, Sophie Ellis-Bextor has confirmed she is going to release an Orchestral Greatest Hits album titled ‘The Song Diaries’, which will be a selection of her greatest hits reworked with an orchestra. It looks like we won’t be waiting long for the album too, as she has also confirmed the album for a Spring 2018 release. The singer attempted to release a Greatest Hits album back in 2007/2008 but for unknown reasons, the album was scrapped.
Ellis-Bextor also recently appeared on the ‘Singalong Live’ segment of Ant and Dec’s Saturday Night Takeaway performing her throwback hit, ‘Murder On The Dancefloor’. This was all with very special reason too as the throwback hit was one of the biggest singles when the first episode aired.
